Patrick Inge Johan Järbyn is a Swedish retired alpine ski racer. He was born in Boras, Sweden on April 16, 1969. Järbyn is a five-time Olympian; he competed at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, 1998 in Nagano, 2002 in Salt Lake City, 2006 in Turin, and 2010 in Vancouver. He achieved his best placing in the 1998 Nagano Super-G in sixth place. He celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 1996 World Cup in Sierra Nevada, winning a silver medal in the Super-G. At the 2007 World Championships in Åre, he won the bronze medal in the downhill and, with the Swedish team, the silver medal in the team competition. Järbyn is the oldest athlete to ever win a medal at a World Ski Championships. His best finish in a World Cup race was second place in the 1998 Kvitfjell Super-G. In September 2007, Järbyn suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his left knee in a training crash in Chile. Despite the injury break throughout the 2007/2008 season and his advanced age, he nevertheless continued his career. On December 19, 2008, he finished third at the Super-G in Val Gardena at the age of 39 years and 8 months; at that time he was by far the oldest skier to achieve a podium finish in the World Cup (later replaced by Marco Büchel and Johan Clarey). At the Winter Olympics on February 19, 2010, Järbyn suffered a fall in Whistler in the men's super-G and was transported by helicopter to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a minor concussion and abrasions on his face. A few weeks later he rejoined the World Cup. In March 2012, he announced his retirement from top-level sport.
