History

Rene Widmer was born in Switzerland and immigrated to Canada in the summer of 1959, landing in Montreal with the intention to stay in Canada for 2-5 years before returning to Switzerland. Through the BC Kayak and Canoe Club, he met Ray Martin, who invited him on a mountaineering trip to Garibaldi Provincial Park along with himself and Cliff Fenner. He found employment as a junior engineer for the construction of the Seymour Falls Dam, north of Vancouver. During this time, he heard Cliff Fenner was looking for park rangers to hire for Garibaldi Provincial Park. Widmer took the job and was partnered with Brian Pinkerton as a park ranger. Rene Widmer worked in Garibaldi Provinvial Park for 1960 and 1961, Fenner as his boss. In 1961, he partnered with Dick Bond as a park ranger, and, at the end f that year, moved back to Switzerland to take on a job for the construction of the San Bernardino highway tunnel in southeastern Switzerland. Widmer was a friend and colleague of Clifford Fenner and appears in many of his photographs - they continued to correspond once per year until Fenner's death on June 21, 2002, and visited each other a several times in between.
