History
Wing Sam was the second cook at Rainbow Lodge, taking over from Lam Shu in 1940. He was cook at the Lodge 1940-1948.
However he was in the 1921 census as living in Rainbow Lodge, with Lam Shu as the 'head' of the family and Wing Sam as his 'lodger'. At this time his occupation was 'cook' so he clearly was cooking at Rainbow Lodge as early as 1921, although presumably not the head cook. The census shows that he was born in China and immigrated to Canada in 1911.
Sam was Chinese and came to Alta Lake when he was 15 or 16. Myrtle taught him how to cook.*

General context
Sam may have been the brother of Lam Shu. Both Vern Lundstrum (WA_1992_032) and Vera Barnfield (WA_1993_025) mentioned that in their oral history interviews.

Notes from Eunice (Kelly) Fairhurst. Black binder in research room "Dick Fairhurst- Whistler Stories". * It is possible that Eunice was confused between Sam and Lam Shu, the earlier Chinese cook. Lam Shu came to Rainbow Lodge fairly young and Myrtle taught him to cook. Or perhaps the two really did have similar stories...
