History
Diane McDonald and her husband, Doug, owned and operated Alpine Lodge at Garibaldi Townsite. They purchased the lodge, which stood along the Cheakamus River and was built by the Crane family in 1922, and winterized it all in 1970. The McDonalds were still operating Alpine Lodge in 1980, when the BC government issued an Order-in-Council declaring Garibaldi Townsite unsafe due to the instability of the Barrier, a naturally-formed lava dam retaining the Garibaldi Lake system. Despite opposition from the residents, the townsite, which had grown considerably by this time, was to be moved. One of the last community gatherings, a pot-luck supper, was held at Alpine Lodge. The McDonalds sold their property to the BC government in 1986 and left the area.
