Geschiedenis

Jim Laidlaw was. He was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland. Jim is the sister of early Whistler resident Lizzie Neiland (nee Laidlaw and formerly Jardine). In the 1910s, his family moved to Canada and eventually settled in Kelowna, BC. When Lizzie's first husband, John Alexander Jardine, passed away in a speeder car accident on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, she and her (at that time) two children with one on the way (Jack, Jenny, and Robert Jardine respectively) moved back to Kelowna to live with Lizzie and Jim's parents. At this time, Jim Laidlaw got to know his niece and nephews much better. While Jim remained living in Kelowna, BC, he would often come to work at the Jardine-Neiland logging operation at 34 1/2 Mile once Lizzie had remarried Thomas Neiland in the 1920s. Jim was trained as a steam engineer but was too shy and introverted to practice this as a career (according to Jenny Jardine's memoirs). By her account, he also played tree fiddle and was a fine artist during the rare free time he had. He had a cabin not far from the Jardine-Neiland's place along the creek. He and his wife, Mary, moved back to Vancouver in the late 1920s, as Mary didn't enjoy living far away from the conveniences of stores and city life. Jim passed away in 1939.
