History
Jim E. Kitteringham grew up in the Whistler Valley (at Alta Lake and Parkhurst) in the 1940s and 1950s, staying on after in Emerald Estates. He was born in 1944 to parents Allen "Olie" Kitteringham and Eleanor Graham Kitteringham (nee Rogers). He and his siblings, Linda and Ron, grew up in the Whistler Valley in the 1940s and 1950s. Jim's father, Olie, worked as a wrangler at Rainbow Lodge at Alta Lake (later Whistler). In 1948, the family moved to Parkhurst, the logging town on Green Lake where Olie worked as a millwright until the mill closed in 1956. Eleanor homeschooled the children, as they were one of the few families with children to live in Parkhurst at that time. Only in 1956, their last year at the mill, were there the requisite 11 children for a proper school to run at the mill. Some years, the boys would boat down to the Alta Lake School near Mons. The Kitteringham family was very musical, and they would often travel by speeder car on the Pacific Great Eastern (PGE) Railway to Squamish to attend music functions. Jim later settled in Emerald Estates – the only original Parkhurst resident to live in Whistler. He took his mother for a tour of the old mill site three decades after they lived there. By then, most of the site had been flattened by neglect and and persistent winter snowpacks, but she could still identify the remains of the family chicken coop, rabbit pen, children’s playhouse, and the single-log wharf they swam from in the summers. He passed away in 2013 at the age of [68 or 69] in British Columbia.
