Bruno Kernen is a Swiss retired alpine ski racer. He was born July 1, 1972 in Thun, Switzerland. His greatest FIS achievement was winning the gold medal at the 1997 World Cup in Sestriere, in the downhill. He also won the silver medal in the combined at this World Cup. In 2003, Kernen won the bronze medal in downhill at the World Cup in St. Moritz. At the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, he won the bronze medal in the downhill. At the 2007 World Cup in Åre, Kernen won the bronze medal in Super-G. Since he has a distant cousin as a namesake who was also a Swiss ski racer, he was referred to as "Bruno Kernen II" on TV at the World Championships. Kernen announced his retirement from top-level sport on July 6, 2007 in the start house of the Lauberhorn descent. The reason he gave was the knee injury he sustained three months earlier after a fall on the descent in Lenzerheide. He is an athlete ambassador for the development aid organization Right To Play. Since retiring, he has also worked as a designer. He enjoys golf, tennis, an cycling in his spare time, and he currently lives in Gunten, Switzerland.
