Whistler Museum & Archives Society Calendar Diary 1988

A Whistler Museum & Archives Society 1988 Calendar Diary. Contains monthly calendar pages from January-December 1988. Also contains numerous archival photos and captions as listed below;

  • "1921 Peak Experience viewing 7th Heaven?" : Alex and Myrtle Philip (in dark clothes) guide guests on a day's hike from Rainbow Lodge.
    -"She'll be coming round the mountain when she comes ..." : Myrtle Philip poses with officials of the Pacific Great Eastern (P.G.E.) railways by the 1935 ford with flanged wheels used to travel on the railroad.
    -"Whistler's First Hotel" : 1926 Deluxe accommodation - the Alta Lake Hotel - built and operated by Russ Jordan near the Alta Lake P.G.E. station near the south end of Alta Lake.
  • "Bring your own knap-sack" : Green Lake General Store: Saddle & Pack - J.C. Rougier, prop.
    -"Teddy Bear's Picnic!" : May 1926: Orphaned "Teddy Bear" was raised at Rainbow Lodge by Myrtle Philip. When grown, he was 'retired' to the Stanley Park Zoo in Vancouver, B.C.
  • "You should have seen the ones that got away!" : The day's catch: Myrtle Philip and guests at Rainbow Lodge, Alta Lake, B.C. c.1915.
    -"Ivan's Workout - Rainbow Style" : Ivan Ackery of Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre fame was a frequent guest at Rainbow Lodge, Alta Lake, B.C. c.1930.
  • "The Happy Gang" : The first picnic of the Alta Lake Community Club was held in 1923 at Rainbow Point. Mr. Harry Horstman presided with the coffee pot.
  • "Early Local Trapper":
    -August 1911: Lou Penniston and Myrtle Philip (right) pose with Charlie Barbour and John Miller (centre) at Mile 34 1/2 on the P.G.E. Railway - now the site of Function Junction. Miller Creek, named for John, flows southward from Alpha Lake.
    -John Miller and Charlie Barbour with Alex Philip (right) stand in front of Miller's cabin and chicken house. This recorded the first visit by the Philips to the Valley after a long walk from Squamish. John rented out bunks at 50¢ per night to travellers.
    -"On the Edge"

  • Christmas holidays in the 1920s at Rainbow Lodge, Alta Lake, B.C. :

File includes a document titled "A Short History of the Garibaldi Area and 'Indian Annies' Part in the Action," subtitled "Prepared (without prejudice) by Ian Barnet who cannot guarantee all the facts." Dates listed chronologically on the document begin in 1908 and end in 1986.

Pacific Great Eastern Railway draft with Passenger Receipt

A draft of the section covering the Pacific Great Eastern Railway with numerous handwritten notes, which focuses on how the train brought passengers to Alta Lake and how Rainbow Lodge provided a rest stop along the journey further north. Also includes a passenger receipt from a train that ran from North Vancouver to Rainbow Lodge for the cost of $3.30.

Notes relating to 5714 Alta Lake Road, lots 10 and 11. Includes notes from a chat with Roger Stacey, correspondence with Florence and Andy Petersen, correspondence with Roger Stacey, and handwritten note from Ray Dove, and a memoir from Ray Dove about Woodbine Cottage.

5690 Alta Lake Road

Typed notes and anecdotes from J'Anne Greenwood, the owner of 5690 Alta Lake Road, Lots 17 and 18. The same stories are laid out several different times in slightly different formats, and cover stories about train travel and how the family came to buy a lot of Alta Lake Road and a general family history.

A surveyor's plan for part of the Whistler Cay neighbourhood that shows how the lots will be subdivided. The only named landmarks are the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, Lorimer Road, Alta Lake and Alta Creek. The scale is 1 inch = 100 feet. The bottom left hand corner contains a legend and signatures from approving officers at the Department of Highways, the owners of the land, and the surveyor. Written just above this in red pen is C. Mott.

Two Resort Municipality of Whistler newsletters from February 1979 and March 1981 sent to the Alpine Club of Canada Vancouver Section. The issues were read and used by the Section executive of the Club and were previously part of the Section archive.

The newsletters broach subjects including regarding a Garibaldi Lift Company announcement to develop the North Face of Whistler Mountain, the rights to develop Blackcomb Mountain by Fortress Mountain Resorts Ltd, the sod turning ceremony of the Town Core [Whistler Village], announcement for a contract for underground parking, the announcement that Arnold Palmer Enterprises set to design an 18 hole golf course [Whistler Golf Course], the Whistler Volunteer Fire Department, private water systems, the Information Center, thank-yous to council members, welcomes to newly elected council members, highway improvements to the north, subdivision paving, overnight camping, Health Center and ambulance service, efforts to establish an R.C.M.P detachment, establishment of a ski train, television and radio reception, bylaws to control dogs and noise, taxes, establishing a municipal works yard, employee housing, schools, road maintenance, garbage service, zoning, recreational facilities, legal costs, budgets, flooding, gas utilities, Municipal Hall, bus transportation, Sunday shopping, construction, the cemetery, and the Cheakamus River.
