02-403-C-3. Pg. 3. Caption: [top] A true adventurer, Briton Paul Claxton passed through Whistler last Wednesday on the first leg of a solo cycling expedition to Alaska by gravel road. Clayton, 21, is an Oxford physics graduate on leave from his research job, and says his 3,000 mile trip, leading to the brink of the Arctic Ocean, is the first of its kind. The determined cyclist is ready for anything. Last Tuesday he wheeled his custom built, $1,400 10-speed into the Daisy Lake campground where he spent the night under a picnic table. His only real worries, however, are bares and the man-eating Canadian mosquito.

Kelly's brother Michael doesn't seem to mind though. Mr. Norton is wondering, however, if there's any more fish like the one he caught still in Alta Lake. He says it's the largest he's seen in years.

Caption: Myrtle Philip School students got an unexpected gift this week when the Whistler Corporate Cup Association, a conglomeration of local businesses and organizations, donated the proceeds of this year's Corporate Cup to the school. Principal Bob Daly (right) accept a $1,549.75 cheque from Jeff Wuolle and Laurie Vance.
02-403-A-2. Pg. 11. Caption: When sworn-in as Justice of the Peace within a few weeks, Nick DiLalla should be familiar with most of the procedure necessary to execute the duties. Dialler is right now studying various legal material that will guide his decisions when asked by RCMP to issues search warrants, or when conducting show-cause hearings for remanded prisoners as well as issuing summonses and subpoenas. Several months ago appeared before a board of examiners including Vancouver Alderman Harry Rankin, and recently was informed that he's wanted for the job.While DiLalla is not sure exactly why he was chosen, he has voiced a strong concern for upholding the rights of citizens.

02-411-B-2. Pg. 1. Caption: Burning debris coming out of a chimney at this Drifter Way house started a fire that caused an estimated $50,000 damage according to Whistler's fire chief Lindsay Wilson. The blaze was reported at 9 p.m. Monday and was brought under full control within 45 minutes. At the time, no one was in the house, which belongs to Kelly Fairhurst.
02-411-A-32. Pg. 5. Caption: The Canadian National Ski Team added $2,500 towards training more World Cup Winners through funds raised at Whistler Mountain's Mouton Cadet Spring Festival this year. Dave Murray, director of skiing for Whistler Mountain, presents the cheque to (l-r) national team members Felix Belzyck, Chris Kent and Gary Athans. New men's coach Glenn Wuertele was also on hand at the Vancouver Ski Show where the cheque was presented. National team members such as Todd Brooker, Dee Dee Haight, Rob Boyd, Mike Carney, Wade Chritie, as well as Belzyck and Athans will also be at the Oct. 31 ski team benefit at Dusty's in Whistler.

It's a long exposure that fools the eye in the photo taken Saturday on the Cheakamus River just north of the Cheakamus Canyon. But winter is coming, and on the top of nearby mountains over a metre of snow has fallen and shows no signs of melting.

Rotarians and guests were feted with steak prepared by Rudi Hoffmann and lobster, flowing in from Nova Scotia, boiled by Ted Nebbeling, District Governor Ralph Crawford also installed Sid Young as the service organization's new president, taking over from Geoff Pearce. As well, Floyd Eclair becomes vice-president, Doug Fox secretary, Nick DiLalla sergeant-at-arms, Walter Zebrowski treasurer, Arv Pellegrin club service director,Brian Brown youth and international service director and Jon Paine vocation service director.

Even at the Toni Sailer Ski Camp there were hot times. On Monday at noon the temperature at Midstation on Whistler Mountain was 21 C.

First Recreation Master Plan

This item is the Resort Municipality's first recreation master plan technical drawing by Trevor Roote. The file contains a three year (1981-1983) program - recreation land development prepared by Trevor Roote, and the sketch was used at public meetings to promote a referendum which raised two million dollars. The funds were used to start building the valley floor recreation facilities like parks, trails, and beaches. The original plan was produced by a volunteer ad hoc committee including Trevor Roote, Al Raine, Murray Coates, Sid Young and Cesar Gianna.
