Harrop, Agnes

Agnes Harrop was a fortune teller and tearoom owner in Whistler in the 1920s and 1930s. In the early 1920s, Bert Harrop and his wife Agnes began to search for property along Alta Lake, eventually purchasing a point of land south of Rainbow Lodge, later called Harrop's Point. Bert, who was a cabinet maker by trade, built a tea room with a large porch that projected out over the water. Harrop's Tea Room became a community gathering point as well as a tourist attraction for many years. Agnes told fortunes there by reading tea leaves and Bert added a cottage available for rent as well as a workshop in which he built furniture. Bert and Agnes sold Harrop’s Point in 1948 to Cathy and Ivan Collishaw who continued to run it under that name until they sold it in 1952. Lloyd and Sharen Mansell then renamed the enterprise Bob’s Point and ran it for only a year before selling to their neighbour Dick Fairhurst, who had been operating Cypress Lodge for a few years before purchasing this property, adding three cabins and a tearoom to his business. The tearoom and Bert’s cottages were demolished in 1962 and replaced with four new cabins as part of Cypress Lodge.
