Historia

Neil Griggs is a community planner and project coordinator who oversaw the creation of Whistler Village from 1977 to 1982. Griggs received a BA and an MA in Community Planning from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver in 1970. His first major project came in 1973 when he was hired to manage the construction of Vancouver's False Creek South neighbourhood, including a sea wall, a school, a park, and two marinas. He founded Griggs Project Management that same year. In 1977, Griggs was contracted by the Resort Municipality of Whistler to oversee the development of Whistler Village. Along with Doug Sutcliffe and Jim Moody, he was responsible for the rapid transformation of a garbage dump into the heart of a modern resort town. Griggs replaced Terry Minger as President and General Manager of the Whistler Village Development Corporation in 1979, taking over the completion of the Arnold Palmer Golf Course, Whistler Village infrastructure, and the first 16 village sites. His involvement with Whistler came to a close in July 1982, when the Whistler Village Land Company was scaled back and most of the staff, including Griggs, were laid off. Griggs' projects after Whistler included the development of Australia's first integrated summer resort in Queensland (1984-1989), the redevelopment of the former Oakalla Prison property in Burnaby, BC (1991), and the creation of the Aboriginal Mother Centre Society building in Vancouver (2008-2013). In 1998, he and his brother Dr. Bill Griggs founded the charity Builders Without Borders, which provides construction services to communities in need, particularly those damaged by natural disasters. Through this foundation, he has been involved with the creation of rural medical clinics in India, the Lakay Youth Trade School in Haiti, a waste management and recycling system in the Maldives, and community housing, a medical clinic, and a women's community centre in Sri Lanka, among other projects.
