History
Mary Forseth (nee Pete) is. She attended Newport High School in Newport, OR, where she met her future husband, Doug Forseth. The couple attended Washington State University in Pullman, WA from 1967-1971. She and Doug moved to Albany, NY post-graduation for the hotel management job he had taken there, and lived in a long list of American cities following his work: Cherry Hill, NJ; Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; Chicago, IL; and Arlington, VA. The couple moved to Canada in order for Doug to become general manager of the Hyatt Regency Vancouver from 1985 to 1992. Mary was a fitness instructor/physical education teacher at the time. During this time in Vancouver, Doug and Mary were 'weekend warriors' in a shared cabin in Whistler before purchasing their first chalet/home there in 1986. After a brief period back in the US while Doug was working as general manager of the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego in California from 1992 to 1994, Doug and Mary moved to Whistler, where Doug became President of the Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation (WMSC). Settling in Whistler meant new opportunities for Mary to pursue a passion for the arts. Although starting work first as a snowshoe guide, she began working at the Adele Campbell Fine Arts Gallery. She worked there for over a decade, then became co-owner. She is a board member and became executive director of The American Friends of Whistler, whose philanthropic works have enhanced many of the town’s bedrock institutions. She sat on the board of Whistler Animals Galore, has been active with the Whistler Valley Quilting Guild for 20 years, and has been part of an local book club for nearly as long. Doug and Mary also created an endowment fund at the Community Foundation of Whistler (CFOW) that will support scholarships for graduates in Sea to Sky who wish to pursue studies in tourism and hospitality. The couple have a dog named Kali, who came to fame in Whistler in 2021 for being on the run around town for 14 days.
