History

Mario Enero is a long-time Whistler resident, originally from Spain, and the former owner of Caramba! and La Rua restaurants in Whistler Village. He grew up in Spain during the Franco years, and the Castilian first started out working in his father's inn in Madrid as a teenager. Enero worked his way though a long list of prestigious kitchens throughout Europe, and then Ontario, before making a trip in 1976 to Vancouver, where he met another fellow Whistler restaurant pioneer: Umberto Menghi. The Italian entrepreneur was looking at the newly built Whistler Village for his next venture, Il Caminetto, and he pegged Enero to manage it. After his stint at Il Caminetto, he set out on his own as owner-operator of both La Rua and Caramba! restaurants in Whistler Village in the 1990s and early 2000s. Having sold these businesses, he continues to live in Whistler and works as a professional hospitality contractor. In 2010, Mario began working with The Innovators, Alberta Meats, and Passion for Pork, with the goal of showcasing natural, hormone-free, and grass-fed proteins to the food and service industry. In 2016, he became the first-ever inductee to the Restaurant Association of Whistler (RAW) Hall of Fame due to his work mentoring the next generation of local Whistler restauranteurs. He is the owner of Enero Holdings.
