History
Peter Durlacher was a Austrian ski instructor, mountaineer, and co-owner of Durlacher Hof who immigrated to Canada in 1953, settling first in Vancouver, then in Whistler. He was born in 1932 in Waisenegg, Steiermark, Austria, the fourth of five children to Maria and Matthias Durlacher. Peter immigrated to Canada in 1953, settling in the Vancouver area. He first worked in the logging industry, then as a tradesman plumber, and eventually as a ski instructor at Mount Seymour Ski School. At the time he met his wife to-be, Erika, he was an avid mountaineer and skier. He met her, then a widow with two young children, in August 1977 at a Vancouver social club they both belonged to. Erika was working in the kitchen of the club during a polka dance contest, and invited Peter on hike the following day with some local families, thus beginning their friendship. They married in May, 1978. In 1988, the couple bought some land in the Nesters area of Whistler and built 'Durlacher Hof', a Tyrolian style bed and breakfast, in less than six months with the help of friends. Durlacher Hof was run as a family business which allowed Erika and Peter, as well as children Ken and Kim, to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle in Whistler. During his time in Whistler, he continued as a ski instructor for the Toni Sailer Summer Ski Camps. Peter retired from his plumbing career at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver in 1993, to assist Erika full-time in running Durlacher Hof in Whistler. In 2006, Peter was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and Durlacher Hof saw fewer guests as Erika focused more time on taking care of her husband. He passed away at age 84 in 2016, after travelling extensively with his wife in his later years.
