Doyle, Charlie

1949-

Charlie Doyle is a Whistler-based artist, designer, and musician who owns Charlie Doyle Sign & Design. He grew up in Thunder Bay and studied at Lakehead University. After travelling Europe and road-tripping in Alberta, he moved to Whistler in to ski in 1973. He found work as a sign designer in Whistler, meanwhile performing with band Foot in the Door on vocals and guitar. In 1977, he co-founded satirical newspaper "The Whistler Answer", a tongue-in-cheek response to the creation of Whistler's main newspaper founded in 1976, The Whistler Question. The satirical newspaper, created by Doyle and his friends in a squatters' shack on the banks of the Cheakamus River, became an emblem for Whistler's growing hippie and ski bum population. Doyle also advocated for squatting rights in face of local and provincial politicians wishing to remove Whistler's squatters in the 1970s. He continued in resident housing advocacy in the 1980s, participating in a small Whistler group forging new solutions for locals’ housing needs at Tapley’s Farm. Doyle enjoys skiing and mountain biking in his free time, having co-founded the Whistler Off-Road Cycling Association (WORCA) in the 1990s. He currently lives in the Whistler Cay neighbourhood of Whistler with his family, where he also runs his sign business.
