History

Ujjal Dev Singh Dosanjh is a Canadian lawyer, politician, and former premier of British Columbia. Born in Punjab, India, he moved to Canada from the UK as a young man and earned a law degree at the University of British Columbia. He was elected in the Vancouver-Kensington riding in 1991 and 1996 as a member of the BC New Democratic Party, and served as the Attorney General of BC from 1995 to 2000. In 1999 he was elected to the leadership of the BC NDP, becoming the first Indo-Canadian provincial leader. He was the Premier of British Columbia from 2000 to 2001. Afterwards he moved on to federal politics, serving as a Liberal MP from 2004 to 2011, during which time he was Minister of Health for two years.
