History
Doug Deeks was a chartered accountant and resident of Whistler. Deeks was born in 1928 in Montreal and grew up there with his younger brother Ken. Though he originally took a keen interest in flute and piccolo (he was principal flautist in the Montreal Junior Symphony Orchestra) he opted instead to pursue an internship with an accounting firm and work his way towards becoming a Chartered Accountant through McGill University. He worked for private firms in Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa, but preferred management consulting. He worked as the assistant auditor general of Canada. He met his long-time wife, Joan, in Ottawa in 1980 as a widower with two children, Tanya and Doug. Joan and Doug were introduced by a colleague of hers and fell in love. After a few years she moved in to the family's farm in Kemptville, ON. After retiring, the two headed out west for a tour of BC ski resorts in the early 1990s, and felt a connection to Whistler, prompting them to move there in 1991. His friend, Jack Bright, encouraged Deeks to run for the North Shore Credit Union's board, a position he held for much of the 1990s. In Whistler, he became a key member of the Mature Action Committee, acting as its treasurer. He belonged to Whistler's Rotary Club, also as treasurer, and often competed with the 'Rotary Rockets' in the Peak to Valley Race. He was also a founding member of Whistler's Seniors Ski Team. In 2010, he volunteered as a gate judge for the Winter Olympic Games. His volunteer work culminated in a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, presented to Deeks in 2012 for his work on many projects with the Skatin First Nation through the Rotary Club. He passed away on August 2, 2012 after a long battle with cancer.
