Historique

David Leighton Buzzard is a local photographer/photojournalist and the son of former Whistler Campground owner Ruth Buzzard. Born in South Africa, he moved to Canada with his mother and brother Mark in 1973. David went on a family camping trip across North America around 1976 and attended the Toni Sailer Summer Ski Camp in 1980.

During his teenage years, he attended high school in Vancouver while his mother ran the Whistler Campground. It was at this time that he began working as a photojournalist for the Teen Beat magazine. David went on to work for various newspapers including the Whistler Question, Pique Newsmagazine, The Citizen, the Squamish Times, the Surrey Leader, the Durban Daily News, Sunday Times, and the Weekly Mail & Guardian Newspapers. He returned to South Africa in 1994 to cover the first free election held in the country; his photographs of this event featured prominently in Michael Schmidt’s "Drinking With Ghosts: The Aftermath of Apartheid’s Dirty War."

David returned to Canada in 1997 and began working as a wedding photographer in the Whistler and Vancouver areas. In 2018, he made an unsuccessful run for the Municipal Council of Whistler. He currently works as a commercial photographer specializing in corporate portraiture, industrial, and food photography.

He has received eight press awards, including two first-place gold medals from the Canadian Community Newspaper Association in 2015. In 2002, one of his photos was selected for the Professional Photographers of Canada traveling print exhibition. He was named a Wedding Wire Bride’s Choice photographer in 2012. While he worked for the Mail & Guardian Newspaper during the fall of Apartheid, the paper was awarded British IPD Best International Newspaper Award and the Missouri Medal for Distinguished Journalism.
