History
Billy Bailiff was born in Liverpool and came to Canada from Cumberland, England. In 1913 he found work with the construction crew blasting a path to make way for the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. During the blasting, a rock overhang was left, and after an argument over its safety, Billy quit. He then walked up the unfinished track to settle in Alta Lake. His home was in a white-washed log cabin on the Pemberton Trail near Scotia Creek, and he kept a trapline up the Cheakamus and in Fitzsimmons Pass. In the winters he caught marten and weasel, snowshoeing between his tar paper and pine bough shelters built along the trail. He built Jordan's Lodge on the shores of Nita Lake in 1933 along with Russ Jordan.
He was described as a "gentle man" with round, rosy cheeks. He was president of the Alta Lake Communtiy Club.
He was drafted into the army on 24 Jun. 1918. His appearance was described as ruddy, with grey eyes and dark brown hair. He was 5'4½" with a chest measurement of 38". He had a "scar (small) left forearm. Birth mark on left side of face. Scar on left hand. Small wart on back." His trade was "logger". 1
