Resort Municipality of Whistler Newsletters

Two Resort Municipality of Whistler newsletters from February 1979 and March 1981 sent to the Alpine Club of Canada Vancouver Section. The issues were read and used by the Section executive of the Club and were previously part of the Section archive.

The newsletters broach subjects including regarding a Garibaldi Lift Company announcement to develop the North Face of Whistler Mountain, the rights to develop Blackcomb Mountain by Fortress Mountain Resorts Ltd, the sod turning ceremony of the Town Core [Whistler Village], announcement for a contract for underground parking, the announcement that Arnold Palmer Enterprises set to design an 18 hole golf course [Whistler Golf Course], the Whistler Volunteer Fire Department, private water systems, the Information Center, thank-yous to council members, welcomes to newly elected council members, highway improvements to the north, subdivision paving, overnight camping, Health Center and ambulance service, efforts to establish an R.C.M.P detachment, establishment of a ski train, television and radio reception, bylaws to control dogs and noise, taxes, establishing a municipal works yard, employee housing, schools, road maintenance, garbage service, zoning, recreational facilities, legal costs, budgets, flooding, gas utilities, Municipal Hall, bus transportation, Sunday shopping, construction, the cemetery, and the Cheakamus River.

Series consists of meeting minutes, newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, a report, and a feasibility study relating to the development of Whistler as a ski hill and a residential area in the 1960s. There is a particular focus on Whistler Alpine Villa Ltd., for which Hartland M. MacDougall (donor's father) worked. Also mentioned are the Whistler Skier's Chapel and Garibaldi Lifts Ltd. The items are arranged in the order they were received from the donor.

Work Starts Garibaldi Ski Resort

Item is a newspaper article entitled "Work Starts Garibaldi Ski Resort," announcing the beginning of construction work at the Garibaldi Ski Resort on Whistler Mountain. Included are a black-and-white photograph of a gondola and a cross-sectional drawing of a housing unit in the Alpine Village. The article was reprinted from Journal of Commerce Weekly, June 12 1965.

Town house in the mountains

Item is a two-page foldout from a magazine, possibly the same one for which WA_2018_015-003 is the cover. On page 8-9 is an article about the town houses (Whistler Mountain Villa) built at the bottom of Whistler Mountain: "Town house in the mountains - There's a 5,000-foot ski run at the front door," by Harris Mitchell. It is accompanied by photographs of the interiors, exterior and view from the villas, taken by Selwyn Pullan.

Page 10 has recipes for lamb, pork, and veal chops. Page [7?] is an article about row houses.

Letter, Whistler Alpine Villa Ltd. to shareholders

Item is a typed letter from the directors of Whistler Alpine Villa Ltd. (per: F. C. Wilkinson) to the shareholders, dated December 22, 1965, regarding a fire which destroyed units 1 to 6 of Whistler Alpine Villa and damaged water and sewage systems on Sunday, December 19, 1965. The shareholders are assured that sufficient insurance coverage is available and that repair work has begun.
