Heine, Richard

Richard Heine was a hotelier and real estate developer who lived in Whistler in the 1970s and 1980s. In [the 1950s or 1960s] in Vancouver, Richard met his wife, Julianna Poltak, who had immigrated to Canada from Slovakia in 1950 with her son, Lester Poltak. Richard and Julianna married and had a daughter, Catherine. In 1973, the family relocated to Whistler from Vancouver. Subsequently, they formed Telemark Enterprises, a construction development company. The family lived on Alta Lake in an area known affectionately as "Heineville". In the 1970s, Richard belonged to the Whistler Television Society, which helped maintain the site of the TV antenna on Sproatt Mountain and collected a fee from members to help fund the television service in Whistler. He was also a member of the Alta Lake District Ratepayers' Association (ALDRA) and the Whistler Rotary Club. In 1995, Richard and Julianna built and operated the Holiday Inn Express in Kamloops, BC for ten years, now known as the Hospitality Inn. Richard passed away in the 1990s, and the Whistler Rotary Club set up a fund and scholarship in his name for students looking to enter the trades.

Heine, Mark

Mark Heine is an artist and author from British Columbia. He was born to artist parents Harry Heine and [?] in BC. As a child, Mark and his family toured and sketched the great cities of the world, immersed in galleries and architecture. In his teens, Heine was awarded the 1979 Attorney General's Art Scholarship, eventually graduating from the Applied Arts Program at Capilano University in Vancouver. He established his own studio in the 1980s, and he has since had his art displayed in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Santa Fe, Denver, Nashville, Philadelphia, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver, Dublin, Belfast, and the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona, Spain. He also has completed corporate commissions for clients such as Sony, Disney, Starbucks, and others, having won nearly 40 national and international awards. In 2017, Heine was awarded the designation of “Associate Living Master" by The Art Renewal Centre (ARC) and was selected from 4800 entries for the Haynes Galleries Award at the 14th ARC Salon for 2019. In 2021, two of his Sirens paintings were selected for inclusion in the Astrobotic/DHL "MoonBox" Time Capsule destined for permanent residence on Earth's Moon aboard the Peregrin Lunar Lander in early 2022. Heine’s work has also appeared in numerous print and online publications, including Hi-Fructose Magazine, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, Magazin’ Art, Applied Arts Magazine, American Art Collector Magazine, International Artist Magazine, The Guide Artist Magazine, Poets and Artists Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, Ophelia Magazine, Preview Magazine, Miroir Magazine, Realism Today Magazine, ARS Magistris Magazine, Galleries West Magazine, and Voyage Chicago Magazine. Notable blogs featuring my work have been My Modern Met and The Creators Project. One of his more recent projects is the Sirens series. Each of these paintings is a captured moment in his coming Sirens book, a work of fiction in the genre of imaginative realism. ​Mark, his wife and creative collaborator Lisa Leighton, and their two daughters, Sarah and Charlotte, live in Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island.

Julianna "Julia" Heine was a hotelier and real estate developer who lived in Whistler in the 1970s and 1980s. Originally from Slovakia, she was married to her first husband, Markos Poltak there and had a son, Lester Poltak. In 1950, she ended her marriage and immigrated to Canada with her son, settling in Vancouver, where she met her second husband, Richard Heine. Richard and Julianna married and had a daughter, Catherine Colbourne (nee Heine). In 1973, the family relocated to Whistler from Vancouver. Subsequently, they formed Telemark Enterprises, a construction development company. The family lived on Alta Lake in an area known affectionately as "Heineville". She was a member of the Alta Lake District Ratepayers' Association (ALDRA) and served as the association's treasurer from 1978 to 1982. In 1995, Richard and Julianna built and operated the Holiday Inn Express in Kamloops, BC for ten years, now known as the Hospitality Inn. Richard passed away in the 1990s, and Julianna spent her later years in a care home in Vancouver until her death on January 31, 2010.

John Howells was a long-time Whistler resident along with his wife, Ruth Howells. He served on the board of the Alta Lake District Ratepayers' Association (ALDRA), the Whistler Mountain District Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Alta Lake District Fire Department in the 1970s. He received Whistler's Citizen of the Year Award in 1978. John and Ruth moved to Duncan, BC in the 2000s.

Jennifer Hromyk is an educator, therapist, and yoga teacher based in White Rock, BC. She grew up in Vancouver. Jennifer completed a Bachelor of Education with a focus in Psychology and Sciences in 1988, and went on to complete a Diploma in English as a Second Language and Linguistics in 1996, both from UBC in Vancouver. She is also a certified yoga teacher. From 1989 to 2012, she worked as a therapist for the Vancouver School Board, and since 2000, she has continued to work for herself as a therapist and educator. She is based in White Rock, BC.
