She had an older brother named Kelty and grew up in West Vancouver and Whistler, practicing ringette, snowboarding, hockey, dance, and drama. She represented Vancouver at the BC Winter games in Smithers BC. The death (by suicide) of her brother Kelty in 2001 was devastating and she struggled through her grief. Riley was training in yoga and had completed 200 hours of teacher training at YYoga in Whistler before travelling to Thailand to pursue another course in Thai massage when, on October 8, 2009, she passed away of heart complications brought on by medication for a separated shoulder while in Thailand. To commemorate their daughter, the Dennehys set up the $1,000 Riley Dennehy Breathe Fore Life Yoga Teacher Training Scholarship Program to be granted to an individual interested in teaching yoga.
