Paul Basagoitia is a professional freeride mountain biker from Minden, NV who won the first ever Crankworx slopestyle event in 2004. He was instrumental in the growth of the freeride mountain bike scene in the 2000s, taking tricks previously only seen in BMX into the world of mountain biking. He competed in his first BMX races at age six and became BMX World Champion in his age group at age ten. Fellow professional mountain biker and friend, Cam Zink, convinced him to switch from BMX to mountain biking as a teenager, and, in 2004, he won the first Crankworx slopestyle event at age 17 without his own mountain bike or sponsors. This launched a professional mountain biking career that would take him all around the world, scoring numerous international wins. Paul was first rider to land a 720 on a mountain bike and the first to do a double backflip on natural terrain. In 2015, a crash in the finals of Red Bull Rampage put an abrupt end to his career. He had fractured his T12 vertebra and damaged his spinal cord – which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He decided to fight against this prognosis, in part motivated by his supporters from around the world and financial support from the mountain biking community. After several months of physiotherapy, he was training at home for up to ten hours a day, eventually getting up from the wheelchair on his own, driving a car again, and taking the first steps without crutches. While he still walks with a stick, he is back on the bike again, though an e-bike. He stars in a documentary about this journey in the film "Any One of Us". He married his long-time girlfriend, Nichole Munk, who saw him through his recovery.
