Penny McLeod (nee), at times known as Penny Ryan, is a resident of Whistler. She and her husband, John Ryan, are philanthropists focused on raising funds for spinal cord research. In 1999, John traveled 5,400 kilometres across Canada on a hand-cycle bike to raise more than $1 million for spinal cord research, with the money being put into a BC Leadership Chair Fund, an joint initiative with the BC government, private donors, and one of the world's leading spinal research centres, based in Vancouver. In the early 2000s, its name later changed to The John and Penny Ryan Leadership Chair Fund, the fund was set up to create Canada’s largest endowed fund focused on spinal cord injuries, community based rehabilitation, science and technology, and a national network for scientists and doctors to share their discoveries. John and Penny have since held fundraising dinners in order to add to this fund.

Canadian Helicopters Ltd, formerly a part of the Canadian operations of CHC Helicopter Corporation, operates 112 aircraft from 26 bases across Canada and provides a broad range of helicopter services to support the following activities: emergency medical evacuation; infrastructure maintenance; utilities; oil and gas; forestry; mining; construction; and air transportation. Its services include operating an advanced flight school; providing third party repair and maintenance services; and providing helicopter services in the United States in support of specialty operations including forest fire suppression activities and geophysical exploration programs. Canadian Helicopters Ltd. was formed in 1987 as a merger (led by Sealand Helicopters founder Craig Dobbin, from Newfoundland) between Sealand Helicopters (founded in 1977), Toronto Helicopters (founded in Ontario), and Okanagan Helicopters Ltd. (previously known as Okanagan Air Services and founded in Penticton, BC in 1947). Until November 2000, Canadian Helicopters was the domestic operating arm of Canadian Helicopters International, a wholly owned subsidiary of CHC Helicopter Corporation. In 2000, Canadian Helicopters was divested by way of a management buy-out. The company continued operations as Canadian Helicopters until it was renamed HNZ Group Inc. after acquiring that company. In December 2017, the company was taken private as Canadian Helicopters Ltd. As of September 2019, Canadian Helicopters Ltd. has two air operator's certificates. The first, 18373, is Canadian Helicopters Limited - Hélicoptères Canadiens Limitée trading as Canadian Helicopters Offshore in Enfield, NS with two helicopters in Goffs (Halifax Stanfield International Airport). The second, 11988, is used for the rest of the fleet in Les Cèdres, QC, where they are headquartered.
